A New Adventure Awaits

Welcome to Scouting in Lexington, MO!

What's the Difference Between a Pack and a Troop?

Pack (Cub Scouts)

A Pack is for youth in Kindergarten through 5th Grade.

The Pack is divided into Dens which correspond with grade levels. The Dens are led by adult Den Leaders.

Once per month, the Pack meets as a group at a Pack Meeting. These meetings are planned by the adult leaders of the Pack called the Pack Committee.

Troop (Scouts, BSA)

A Troop is for youth 11 to 18 years of age, having finished the 5th grade or 101/2 and have received the Arrow of Light Award, Cub Scouts highest rank.

The Troop is led by scouts that are elected to be Senior Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader under the supervision and guidance of the Scoutmaster and other trusted adults. The Troop is then divided into Patrols which are led by Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders who are elected from within the Patrol.

A Troop camps every month. The campouts are planned by the scouts with some help and guidance from the adults.

Registration

Each member of the Pack and Troop, youth and adult, must register with the Boy Scouts of America. This can be done in paper form or online through the www.beascout.org website. Adult leaders must complete Youth Protection Training every two years as well as other position specific training. Each year, each person's registration must be renewed. This process is called "recharter" and is handled by the Pack and Troop committees for each unit. Fees for recharter are usually collected before October and will be announced as much in advance as possible.
